Abstract
Coloured synthetic resin compositions are produced by polymerizing one or more monomers, containing one or more CH2=C< groups per molecule, containing a dissolved coloured chelated compound of a metal in group 6A, 7A or 8 of the Periodic Table and one or more organic compounds which contain the group -CO-CHR-CO-, where R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical. Specified monomers are methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, methyl a -chloracrylate, vinyl acetate, styrene, and allyl methacrylate. The monomer may also contain ancillary ingredients such as plasticisers, dyes, pigments, accelerators and inhibitors. The polymerization may be carried out by heat, using peroxide catalysts such as benzoyl peroxide, or by light using catalysts such as uranyl acetate or nitrate. Specified metals are chromium, uranium, manganese, iron, cobalt and nickel. Specified organic compounds are acetylacetone, benzoyl-acetone, n-hexoylacetone, dibenzoyl-methane, 3-n-butyl acetyl acetone, propionylacetone, and oxaldiacetophenone. In examples, benzoyl peroxide is used to polymerize (a) methyl methacrylate containing (1) chromium acetyl acetone, (2) iron benzyl acetone, (5) iron acetyl acetone, (6) and (7) cobalt acetyl acetone; (b) (3) styrene containing iron acetyl acetone; and (c) (4) methyl a -chloracrylate containing iron acetyl acetone. Starch is used in (7) as a granulating agent. The products may be used as colour filters, lenses, prisms, fog screens, protective spectacles, navigation lights for ships and aircraft, traffic lights and indicator lights.
