[Class 75 (iii)] The head of a pyrophoric lighter for smokers' use comprises upper and lower portions integral with each other, the upper portion 2 housing a spring-pressed flint 23 the pressure on which may be adjusted by means of a thumb nut 26 engaging a splined screw 27 and the lower portion 3 housing a shutter 1, hinge 5, shutter detent 6 and an inclined or vertical wick tube 7. The lighter fuel reservoir 8 is closed at the bottom by a base 9 fitted with a filling plug 10 arranged so that wick renewal may be effected through its aperture. The rasp wheel 13 engaging the flint has dog-toothed engagement with a knurled thumb wheel 17 mounted on a stationary spindle 15 threaded in a socket 18 seated in the side wall of the reservoir. Radial orifices 22 are cut in the part 2 opposite the wheel 13. The wick tube 7 is of perforated metal having an enlarged neck 34 formed as a press fit or threaded in an inclined hole in the portion 3. The neck is formed with an axial slot 36 for adjustment of the wick. The axis of the detent 6 is offset from the shutter pivot to hold the shutter in an open or closed position. The parts of the lighter may be die cast or formed from hot metal castings or the head and base may be cast and the body formed of sheet metal or tubing.
