Abstract
582,574. Fuzes for aerial bombs &c. MIDGLEY, A. H. Feb. 7, 1944, No. 2271. [Class 9 (i)] A fuze for aerial bombs and like missiles of the kind in which a detonator carrier is slidable transversely in a slot in the body of the fuze and held in the unarmed position against spring resistance by a releasable device, has the spring located in an eccentrically disposed bore in said carrier, the carrier having a small hole in its upper surface into which a pointed tool can be inserted to facilitate movement of the carrier to compress the spring during assembly of the fuze. In the application of the invention to a direct-action fuze, the carrier d with spring f and aperture e to hold the detonator, is held in the unarmed position in the slot c in the fuze body by a pin g bearing against a spring lever h located in a slot h<1> in the fuze. The lever h is withdrawable by a screw cap i rotated by a vaned member k, thus releasing the pin g and allowing the carrier to be moved by the spring f into the position in which the detonator is in line with the striker l. A flash passage m is provided to dissipate the flash of the detonator harmlessly in case of accidental premature ignition. The small hole in the upper surface of the carrier is not shown in the drawings. The invention is also described as applied to a delay-action fuze similar to that forming the subject-matter of Specification 576,664 in which a spring-loaded striker is held from operation by balls engaging a conical surface on the striker and restrained from lateral separation by a movable sleeve surrounding the balls. An extension of this sleeve engages the edge of the detonator carrier and holds it in unarmed position. Movement of the sleeve releases the carrier which moves into the armed position and then releases the balls, allowing the striker to operate. Delay action is by lead shear wire holding the movable sleeve to the fuze body, the wire being cut through after a predetermined time under the force exerted on the movable sleeve by the striker spring after an inertia-operated locking device has been released on impact.
