Abstract

582,527. Joining metal trusses. BUDD MANUFACTURING CO., E. G. March 17, 1944, No. 5008. Convention date, Jan. 28, 1943. [Class 20 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A trussed frame, more particularly for aircraft structures, in which a first truss member and two substantially aligned transverse members are connected at a joint in the first member, is characterised by the fact that one of the transverse members has a longitudinal element thereof extending through an opening of the first truss member and that a gusset or the like is arranged on one side of the first truss member interconnecting the parts of said member on opposite sides of the opening, the longitudinal element extending through the opening and a longitudinal element of the second transverse member. The invention is shown applied to an aeroplane rudder, comprising a longitudinal spar 11 consisting of upper and lower chord members 40, 41, connected by vertical and diagonal struts 46, 47, a nose portion 14 secured by chords 36a, 36b, in substantial alignment with the upper and lower chords 30, 31, of the transverse rib trusses. The ends of the vertical struts 46 are formed with springs 100, 101, Fig. 6, through which the ends of the nose chords 36a, 36b, project, gusset plates 50, 69, secured to the vertical struts enclosing the chord ends and providing attachments for the ends of the channel-sectioned rib chords 30, 31. The gussets 69 are provided with flanges 70, 71, and 72 for attachment of the spar diagonals 47 and rib diagonals 33, respectively. A gusset plate 61 is secured to the rear surface of the strut 46 to impart resistance to torsional forces.
