Abstract

581,300. Cellular rubber; moulding hollow rubber bodies. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Aug. 30, 1944,. No. 16477. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1943. [Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] Cellular rubber containing open and closed cells is made from capsules formed of a rubber mix containing a blowing agent and enclosing air or gas &c., which are put into a mould and heated so that they coalesce, the blowing agent forming the closed cells, and the gas which escapes from the capsules towards the walls of the mould, the open cells. The rubber mix is fed through a hopper 15 of the extruding machine shown, a screw 14 forcing it through nozzle 18 which has an axial pin 17, the extruded tube 19 being formed into capsules 10 by projections 23 on rotating wheels 20, 21. Gas or volatile liquid may be supplied via a passage 28, 30 to the interior of the capsules. The capsules are coated with zinc stearate in a tank 24. A rubber composition specifies diazoaminobenzene as the blowing agent, and usual additives.
