Abstract

580,212. Vehicle doors. ATCHERLEY, W. C. June 17, 1944, No. 11589. [Class 20 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXII] A sliding door for a vehicle is guided in upper and lower tracks on the body above and below the door by spaced roller r bearings having their axes in or parallel to the plane of me door, each lower bearing being provided with a ball or roller thrust bearing to support the weight of the door. As shown in Fig. 1 either door 10, 11 can be pushed out laterally in guides fixed to the roof 12 and running board 13 and then slidably guided in a longitudinal direction to clear the other door as described in Specification No. 505,672, [Group XXXII]. The door 10, Fig. 5, is provided with brackets 20 each having a pintle 21 carrying a roller bearing 22 slidable in the upper guideway in the cornice 12, a spring 23 mounted on the pintle compresses a washer 24 against the underside of the cornice and prevents rattle. Similar roller bearings are provided at the bottom of the door and each carries a ball thrust bearing 29 bearing on the upper surface of the running board 13. In a modification the ball thrust bearing is pressed down by a spring and the roller bearing on the pintle is barrel shaped to allow for any misalignment or warping of the door. The guideways may be formed by a channel iron into which the .sheet metal of the running board is pressed, drain holes may be formed in the channel iron.
