Abstract
580,201. Ash-trays. LAIRD, G. S. Dec. 6, 1943, No. 20374. [Class 130] An ashtray having mounted therein a support for a cigarette, is formed with a smooth external surface free from any lodgment which would retain a cigarette leaned against it and the height of the support and the diameter of the tray are such that a cigarette falling from the support must be caught by the tray. A wide bowl 1 carries a central pillar or support 3 in the upper part of which are recesses 4 to receive cigarettes, a further holder being constituted by upstanding parts 5, 6 of an ornament on the top of the pillar, the recess 7 so formed having a relatively broad contacting surface to avoid crushing the cigarette. A support 10 raises the outside edge of the bowl above a height at which a cigarette can be leaned against it; if the edge is within this height, either the edge is made smooth and curled inwardly or provided with a circumferential protruberance of triangular cross section or the sides of the tray are flared outwards to merge tangentially into the plane of the upper edge of the tray. The tray is large enough wholly to contain a cigarette laid in it. Below the recesses 4, the pillar is provided with extinguishers 8 having removable linings 9.
