579,691. Lathes. JACK & HEINTZ RESEARCH CORPORATION. May 30, 1944, No. 10392. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1943. [Class 83 (iii)] Non-rotary work-holding devices.-A workholder comprises a base 1, a work table 2 slidably mounted on the base, a clamping table 10 slidable on the work table, means for moving the clamping table 10 along a sliding track on the work table frictional abutment and indexing means 6, 7 on the work table to hold and align one end of the work 8, abutment means 23 on the clamping table to hold and clamp the other end of the work, spring means 29 for opposing the movement of the work table along the base 1 as the force moving the clamping table is transmitted to the work table through the work 8 and means operative on the backward movement of the clamping table to remove the work from the frictional abutment means to facilitate the removal of the work from the holder. The invention is shown applied to the holding of a gimbal, one end of which is to be machined by a tool 43 in a rotary holder 5. The end to be machined is placed over a boss 7 on a support 6 secured to the work table 2, whilst the other end rests on an arm 9 projecting from the clamping table 10 which is moved to the left, as shown in Fig. 1, by a piston rod 16 to abut the edge 22 of the work. Table 2 also moves to the left during the end part of the movement of the piston, and an arm 33 carried by the rod 16 passes beneath the rear end of the arm 9, whose movement to the left is limited by a stop 25. When the movement of the piston is reversed after the machining operation, a foot 34 on the arm 33 engages a foot 35 on the arm 9 so that a foot 42 at the other end of the arm 9 engages a face 44 of the work and serves to pull the work off the boss 7. The other end 39 of the arm 33 then engages a stop 40 so that it is rotated against the action of a spring 24 to release the feet 34 and 35 whereupon the arm 9 is returned to its original position by means of a spring 41.
