Abstract

579,640. Retractable undercarriages for aircraft. AIRCRAFT COMPONENTS, Ltd., and BRIDGES, D. G. May 18, 1938, No. 14842. [Class 4] In a retractable undercarriage having a folding element such as a radius rod, locking means are carried on the folding element and comprise a latch and a detent carried by an articulated frame with pivotal connections to the two parts of the element in such manner that folding of the element deforms this frame and consequently shifts the detent relatively to both parts of the element, whilst unfolding of the element results in the detent being returned to a location in which the latch can engage it for locking. In the form shown, the latches are disengaged by lost motion of a retracting jack connected to the folding element. The latches 10 and 11 are hinged at 12 to a lug 4F provided on the upper part 4B of the folding element, to which the jack 5 is also connected by means of a pin 5B and slot 6. In the extended position of the undercarriage, Fig. 2, the latch 10 engages a detent 9 forming a pivotal connection between the links 7 and 8, of which the latter is adjustable in length. Upon commencement of the retracting movement of the jack, the latch 10 is disengaged by the pin 5B which then comes in contact with the upper end of the slot 6 and retraction proceeds, accompanied by folding of the parts 4B, 4c of the folding element, to the position shown in Fig. 3. The link 7 is thus constrained by the link 8 to rotate anticlockwise, taking with it the integral lever 15 and thus causing the resilient device 13B to rotate both latches clockwise and finally cause the latch 11 to engage with the detent 17, which is carried by the aircraft structure. Upon extension of the undercarriage, the latch 11 is disengaged by lost motion of the jack, and the latch 10 engaged by the device 13B. Electrical contactors 16 may be provided to indicate when the latches are home. According to the Provisional Specification, a fluid dashpot may be provided to prevent sudden movements due to disengagement of the latches.
