[Class 135] [Also in Group XXXV] An apparatus for controlling flowing concentrations of dispersions or solutions of solids in liquids, such as aqueous suspensions of coal or ore, and dispersions of non-miscible liquids and solutions of miscible liquids of different specific. gravity, described as applied to coal slurry, comprises the weighing of a portion of the fluid while static. A weighing pipe 7 having a valve 8 may be actuated to stop the flow of a portion of the slurry from a tank 5 after which a valve 10 opens so that the weight of the static column is measured by a pressure gauge 11. If the concentration is outside predetermined limits, the pressure gauge pointer controls pneumatic or other means to operate either a pump or valve 15 to add diluent or means to increase the concentration of the dispersion in the basin 1. A pump 3 carries the slurry from the basin to the tank 5 where most of it passes by a pipe 6 to a separator. The valves 8, 10 may be automatically operated at predetermined intervals.
