Abstract

579,298. Cables ; two-part couplings. BYRNE, E. L. W. (Titeflex, Inc.). March 30, 1944, No. 5915. [Classes 36 and 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] A radio-shielding chamber surrounding the coupling between a sparking plug and the lead thereto comprises a tubular member 14 and a sleeve 24 arranged so that gas from the chamber passes under the sleeve and up a space 27 to reach a vent 28 in the member 14. The member 14 is screwed into an extension 13 of the plug and attached by a flanged nut 15 to a tubular elbow 6 containing the electric lea'd. The sleeve 24 is formed of insulating material, e.g., two mica cylinders clipped together by an annular member 26. The electric coupling comprises a split clip 22 which springs over a globular head 23 of the central electrode of the plug. The gas described is compressed air which, after passing down to elbow 6, to reach the chamber escapes through notches 26 at the base of the sleeve 24 or by the rough edge thereof. The vent 28 is controlled as described in Specification 579,308, by a valve 29 mounted on a bi-metallic strip surrounding the chamber 14, by a trapezoidal or rectangular ring made of a metal having high thermal expansion, or simply by a light flat coiled spring. The air is supplied through a chamber surrounding the magneto or distributor and a harness to which the elbow 6 is connected.
