Abstract
189,574. Runbaken, J. H., and Torrance, W. Sept. 8, 1921. Detecting faults.-A device for use in testing magnetos and sparking-plugs in electric systems comprises three visible electrodes for connection respectively to a high-tension lead to an insulated electrode of a sparking-plug, and to earth, the earthed electrode being adjustable relatively to the electrode connected to the sparking-plug, In the form shown, three electrodes b, c, d project inwardly from the arms of a T-shaped case a, the active ends of the electrodes being visible through a window and the space around them being ventilated by means of a wire gauze screen q, which prevents the production of explosions by sparks at the electrodes. The electrode c is connected to an insulated pole of a sparking-plug by means of a clip f, and the electrode b is connected to the, high-tension lead of the magneto. The electrode d is formed by the end of a rod i adjustable, by a hand-knob j against the action of a spring g, and is connected to earth through a sleeve m and a pin k connected by a chain to a ring placed on the body of the sparking-plug. The position of the magneto and plug are investigated by observing the sparks between the electrodes b, c and c, d respectively. The engine cylinder connected to the device may be put out of action by depressing the electrode d to the fullest extent, a bayonet-joint or the like maintaining the electrode in this position.
