Abstract

579,259. Unpacking bundles. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and TIPS, E. O. June 5, 1944, No. 10784. [Class 94 (i)] [Also in Group XXI] Bundles a, b of articles such as leaflets, strips o metallized paper &c each comprising one or a plurality o: articles wrapped ir roll form by ar encircling band of paper or the like are connected together in chain form to facilitate successive withdrawal from a source of supply, the connection of one bundle b with an adjacent bundle a comprising a string or the like, a part c of which is disposed within the encircling band, and a part f which forms a loop e and extends along the length of and outside the band and is tied to the opposite end d. The loop e on the bundle b is engaged by the part f of the bundle a, so that when bundle a is pulled by means of the string along its length it will slide relatively to the bundle a and then pull bundle a, but when the string is pulled outwardly the encircling band will be slit to release the articles. The string may be applied to the band by adhesive or by stitching. A series of bundles are packed in a magazine with the loops e at the rear and the ends d, f at the front, so that on pulling the end of the string of the last bundle, all the bundles will be withdrawn successively. Where the magazine holds groups of bundles end to end and each group consists of a number of banks of bundles, the trailing end of the string of the last bundle of one group is tied by a length of string to the leading end of that bundle in the next group which is to succeed it in the chain. In the case of two such groups the first bundle packed in the front group will be the last in the chain. The magazine may be fitted with a tapered portion leading to a pipeline consisting of a series of tubes, large enough to allow the passage of a bundle, joined together by spherically-seated joints, the last tube leading to a housing for a power-driven drum and a grooved pulley. A length of string from the first bundle passes through the tubes and over the pulley to the drum. As each bundle arrives at the pulley, the string, as it passes to the drum, slits the encircling band around the bundle. The bundles are pushed into an adjustable outlet conduit by succeeding bundles. The conduit is connected by tubes to a distribution point Where the distribution is to take place from an aircraft, the tubes lead to an ejector chamber situated outside the aircraft and comprising two inclined frusto-conical parts. The flow of air through the ejector assists distribution. Where several sub-magazines are stacked one above another, supporting shelves may be arranged in the tapered portion leading to the pipeline.
