Abstract

579,231. Firing magnetic mines. THORNYCROFT, SIR J. E., THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd., J. I., ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CALVERLEY, J. E. Jan. 19,1940, No. 1181. [Class 9 (ii)] A submersible electromagnet for use in exploding magnetic mines comprises a torpedo-shaped vessel, a magnetic core which does not form a closed circuit, a magnetizing coil, means for energizing the coil, and means for keeping the device submerged at a predetermined distance above the sea-bed. The vessel 1 is provided with a towing device 16, and a screw 11 at its rear which operates on being dragged through the water to drive an electro-generator 6, which is positioned inside the vessel within the hooded end 5 of an open magnetic core 2 adapted to be energized by a surrounding coil 3. The current may be simply direct current or a combination of direct and alternating current to vary the strength of the field. The coil is enclosed by a casing 19 open at both ends and the hood 5 is provided with apertures 5a through which cooling air is circulated by a fan 6a on the screw shaft 8. The vessel is provided either with resiliently mounted wheels 22 at its front and a carriage spring 29 at its rear, which contact with the bed of the sea when it is required to drag the device thereon, or with a length of chain which is raised by the natural buoyancy of the device until a predetermined level above the sea bed is attained. The device may be charged with air at a greater pressure than the pressure due to submergence in order to prevent inward leakage of water through the shaft bearings. Vanes 14 are provided at the stern to cause submergence when the device is being towed by overcoming the natural buoyancy of the device.
