Abstract
579,026. Protective cut-out arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and LIDDIARD, H. W. C. Nov. 13, 1944, No. 22325. [Class 38 (v)] Protection of a synchronous motor SM against heavy circulating currents which flow when, due to the opening and automatic reclosure of one of the breakers CB1. &c. an out-of-phase condition is established between the restored supply volts and the voltage generated by the stillrunning motor, is effected by connecting in the motor excitation-circuit a high-speed, h.r.c. fuse F, which is ruptured by the compensating A.C. component superimposed on the normal D.C. exciting current, and opens the field circuit, the resulting increase in the motorreactance then limiting the circulating current to a non-dangerous value. To deal with moderate out-of-phase conditions, the breaker CB is tripped by a relay R sensitive only to the A.C. component in the excitation-circuit. A discharge circuit DR, prevents undue voltagerise on rupture of the fuse.
