Abstract

578,727. Projectiles. DUNCAN, R. W., and COULTHARD, W. H. April 7, 1936, No. 10255. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to projectiles such as bombs or torpedoes for dropping from aircraft into water, and consists in forming the nose of the projectile with a spherical surface B, which is concentric with the centre of gravity C.G. of the projectile (or approximately so), an abrupt change of contour occurring at the boundary edge C of the nose, so that when cavitation of the water is produced by the passage through it of the projectile, the effect is such that the water pressure is applied only to the nose surface, and the resultant moment about the centre of gravity of the projectile, tending to affect its trajectory, is negligible. The simple form shown in Fig. 1 may be modified as shown in Fig. 2 by the provision of a projection D on the spherical nose, which projection on entering the water produces a cavity, the widest crosssection of which is of less diameter than the spherical nose.
