Abstract

578,567. Abrasive bands. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. May 2, 1944, No. 8275. Convention date, May 17, 1943. [Class 60] , An endless band or sleeve of abrasive coated material is formed from a sheet of the material by bringing the ends of the sheet into abutting relation, applying an adhesive to the backing material of the sheet on each side of the joint applying a number of wires or strands of metal &c. to the adhesive to extend across the joint and applying pressure to embed the wires in the backing, the joint thus formed being of substantially the same thickness as the other parts of the sheet. Fig. 3 shows the use of wires in the form of a wire mesh 15, which is applied to adhesive 14 on the backing 11 extending at each side of the abutting ends 13 of the abrasive sheet band 11, 12, the wire mesh being pressed to embed it in the backing 11 ; the joint may run diagonally across the band, or may have its ends serrated or formed with interlocking areas as shown in Fig. 8. In place of woven metal wire, a woven glass cloth may be used. Spirally wound abrasive cylinders, from which lengths are cut are formed by winding an abrasive strip with abutting edges overlying a jointing strip wound spirally on a mandrel, pressure then being applied to the abrasive strip to embed the jointing material in the backing.
