994,410. Making solder strips; soldering; Shearing. KAY & CO. (ENGINEERS) Ltd. April 13, 1962 [May 3, 1961], No. 16019/61. Headings B3A, B3R and B3W. A strip of solder for use in joining pipes is cut to length and secured to a backing of thin sheet material by gum or adhesive, to be peeled off and adhered to a part to be joined. A roll of paper is passed between rollers which press a longitudinal channel therein and flux cored solder from a reel is passed, after flattening between rollers and coating with gum or adhesive, with the paper through rolls which press the solder into the groove. Alternatively the paper may be coated with gum or ahesive. The assembly is passed between a backing roller with a resilient surface and a cutter roller having radially projecting cutters embedded in resilient material to cut the assembly into lengths. The gum or adhesive may be a flux and the backing may be treated with silicone to prevent running of the adhesive. Strips of solder are peeled from their backings and pressed into circumferential grooves at the ends of a tubular coupling member and pipe ends are placed over the coupling for soldering. A plurality of solder strips may be adhered to a single backing sheet.
