To all 'whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM Novlcx, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county' of New York and State of New` York, have invented certain new and useful cation I have illustrated the Preferriid 'em' l 'so Improvements` in Envelop-Fastener Strips, of which theffollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to envelop fastener strips and particularly to such strips of that class as are adapted to be severed into suitable lengths andprovided with tongues and aflxed to envelop bodies, for coaction with perforationsin the envelop flaps for fastening the flaps to fthe envelop bodies, respectively. y
The object of `my improvements is to provide a strip of the class specified of simple construction, which may be manufactured in a continuous length by simple machinery at small expense.
This application is divided Out of 'my' pending application Serial Number 122,190,
iled September 26, 1916, envelop'fasteners. vIn the drawing accompanying this appli'- bodiment of my improvements, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the str1p with portions broken away and another portion turned back to clearly show the several features thereof. 2 isa similar plan view. showing a mo cation of myV improvements. Fig.l 3 is another similar plan view showing a further modification.` Fig. 4 is a cross section on line 4--4 of Fig. 1. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are plan views illustrating several forms of fasteners made from the strip of Fig. 1. The scale is the same through-A out the figures of the drawing, except that the thicknesses of material in Fig. 4 are somewhat exaggerated -to more clearly show the construction. Y
In the showing of Figs. 1 and 4, my improved fastener strip comprises a strip of sheet material 2, which-may be of paper, cloth, or some other-suitable stock. This strip is provided with an adhesive 3 O n one '4 -face thereof. A metal strip 5, preferably materially narrower than strip 2, has folded thereabout a second strip'of sheetmaterial 6. Preferably said second strip is approxiandhasits lateral edges folded over the yedge-s of the metal strip, thereby inclosing said metal strip.' Said second strip 6, inclosing said metal stri 5, is then laid lengthwlseand preferab y positioned 'midway widthwise said first strip 2, with the.
faces of the adjoining edge portions of said second strip 6 contacting with and secured' to said rst strip by adhesive 3.
In the modification .of Fig. 2, said. second' strip -6 is wrapped diagonally about metal.
strip of Figs. 1 and 2. Said wires are then I strip 6 and secured to strip 2, similarly to the showing of Fig. 1. 7
inclosed by Specillcation ot Letters'ratent. .l i Patented Aug; 6,191.8. I
-mately twice the width of said metal strip For forming into individual fasteners, see l Fig. 5, a short ortion of the assembled strip, as of the. nished part of Fig. 1, is severed from the main portion of said strip, and the widthwise mid portion of strip 2 to which strip' 6 is attached, is separated near i onek end thereof from the laterally adjoinjingportions 9 .and 10, by cuts or incisions V1'1 and' 12.' Preferably these incisions ex' tend one half to two thirds the length of the short portion Of strip 2 of Fig. 5. There is'therebyv formed `a prong or tongue 13, comprising a portion of said strip 2, a portion o5f folded strip 6 and a portion Ofmetal strip In the showi of Fig. 6, the short portionv of the assem led str1p is provided with incisions 11 and 12 at each end whereby opposite tongues 13 and 14 are formed In the showing ofFi 7, the portions 9 and 10 of strip 2 of ig. 5 are removed, leaving tongue 13 free.
of Figs. 5, 6
The indi 'dual fasteners and 7, may be affixed to moistening adhesive 3.
It will -be understood that the several modifications shown in the drawings are my improvements, and that other variations envelop bodies by illustrative 'of the general application of will appear to those skilled in the art. Also,
` Having described my improvements, what I claim is:
comprising a strip of sheet material having an adhesive on one face, a strip of metal narrower than Said strip of sheet material, and a second Strip of sheet material folded about said metal strip, said second strip of sheet material, .carrying said metal strip, being laid lengthwise said first strip of sheet material and Secured thereto by said adhesive.
2. A strip of envelop fastener material comprising a strip of sheet material having an adhesive on one face, a strip of metal narrower than said strip of sheet material, and a second Strip of sheet material folded about and inclosing Said metal strip, said second strip of sheet material, inclosing said metal-strip, being laid lengthwise said first strip of sheet material and secured thereto by said adhesive.
3. A strip of envelop fastener material comprising a strip of sheetimaterial having an adhesive on one face, a strip of metal narrower than said strip of sheet material,
and a second strip of sheet material folded.
way widthwise said'irst strip of sheet mate-` -rial and secured thereto by said adhesive;
tioned midway widthwise said first strip of an adhesiveon one face, a'strip of metal secured thereto said -f" envelop fastener material narrower than Said st ripof sheet material,
l n and a second strip of sheet material, ap! 1. A strip of envelop fastener material.
proximately twice the width of Said metal strip, being laid parallel to and folded about said laid lengthwise and positioned midway widthwise Said first strip of sheet material and secured thereto by said adhesive.
6. A strip of envelop fastener material comprising a strip of sheet material having an adhesive on one face, a strip of meta etal strip, said second strip of 'sheet' material, carrying` said vmetal strip, being narrower than said Strip of sheet material, l
and a second strip of sheet material, approxi-` matelyl twice the width of said metal strip,
being laid parallel to and folded about said metal strip, said folded second strip of sheet material, carrying Said metal stri being laid lengthwise said first strip of s eet material and the faces of the adjoining edge portions of said second strip being secured to said rst strip of sheet material by said adhesive.
7. A strip of envelop fastener material comprising a strip of sheet material having.
an adhesive on one face, a strip of metal narrower than said Strip of sheet material,
being` laid parallel to and folded about said metal strip, said folded second strip of sheet material, inclosing Said metal strip, being laid lengthwise and positioned midway widthwise Said first strip of sheet material and the faces ofthe adjoining edge portions of said second strip being secured to said first strip bysaid adhesive.
In witness whereof, I hereunto ailix my signature this 26th day of December, 1917.
