Abstract

578,517. Purifying mineral oils. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. April 14, 1943, No. 5994. Convention date, Feb. 18, 1942. Drawings to Specification. [Class 91] A Diesel fuel is prepared by separating a petroleum gas oil into a light fraction, an intermediate fraction and a heavy fraction, subjecting the light fraction to selective solvent extraction to free it from aromatic hydrocarbons, hydrogenating the heavy fraction and then recombining the three fractions. The selective solvent used in extracting the light fraction may be liquid sulphur dioxide, furfural or a glycol ether, while the hydrogenation of the heavy fraction may be carried out in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst comprising an oxide or sulphide of a Group 6 metal such as chromium, molybdenum or tungsten, alone or mixed with oxides or sulphides of other metals, such as nickel sulphide, zinc oxide, magnesium oxide or aluminium oxide. The gas oil treated may be a straight petroleum distillate or a product of a cracking or hydrogenation process, or mixtures of these. Apparatus is described in which a petroleum gas oil is subjected to fractionation to give a light fraction boiling below 550‹F., an intermediate fraction boiling between 550‹F. and 650‹F., and a heavy fraction boiling above 600‹F., the light fraction is subjected to solvent extraction in a countercurrent extractor tower, the heavy fraction is hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, and the three fractions are then recombined. Various addition agents such as ignition promoters, cold starting agents, pour point depressants, viscosity modifiers, dyes, corrosion inhibitors and anti-oxidants may be incorporated in the Diesel fuel. For comparison purposes, details are given of the effect of solvent extraction and hydrogenation on the properties of all fractions of a typical straight run naphthene base petroleum gas oil.
