Abstract

578,137. Mercury vapour rectifying apparatus. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO., Ltd., and KING, S. G. May 22, 1944, No. 9817. [Class 38 (ii)] The spare tubes in a hot-cathode mercury vapour rectifier equipment are arranged to be energised for a short period, to prevent deterioration, whenever the equipment is switched on. A time switch A<2> closes for a short time on switching on, and thus energises.contactor B having holding-in contacts B<1> in series with the normally-closed contacts C<1> of a relay C. The cathodes of the spare tubes E and the heater of a thermal time-delay switch F are energised from secondaries D<1>, D<2> of a transformer D on closure of contacts B<2>. The switch F closes after a time long enough to ensure heating of the cathodes E<1>, thus energising a relay F<1> and supplying a transformer G through contacts F<2>, B<3>. The ends of the secondary G2 are connected to the rectifier anodes E<2> and a centre-tap to a load resistance H, having in parallel with it a condenser K charged slowly through a resistance J<1>. At a predetermined condenser-voltage a neon lamp L strikes and passes current to the relay C thus opening the contacts C<1> to trip the contactor B.
