Abstract

Addition agents for lubricating oils are of the general formula <FORM:0577955/IV/1> where "T" represents a negative element of group VI such as O or S, "X" represents H, an organic radicle, an onium base residue or a metal equivalent, "Y" represents H, or an organic group such as alkyl or aryl, "Z" represents an inorganic negative element or radical such as halogen, -CN or -SCN, or a radical which is linked to "R" by a negative element of groups V and VI such as O, S, P or N, and "R" represents a divalent alkyl linkage <FORM:0577955/IV/2> , "R1" being H, alkyl, or aryl. The type of compound emphasized comprises hydroxy-benzyl chloride, hydroxy-benzyl sulphide, hydroxy-benzyl xanthate, hydroxy-benzyl-alkyl thioether as well as metal salts of each of these. Specific examples comprise chlormethyl di-isobutyl phenol and complex derivatives thereof, bis-(amyl thiomethyl) di-isobutyl phenol, and its Ba salt, and xanthates of chlormethyl di-isobutyl phenols and their Ca salts. The compounds are generally prepared by the normal alkyl phenol-formaldehydehydrogen halide condensation reaction and in the case of sulphur derivatives, metal salts and more complex compounds these are then prepared from the above condensation products. The details are given of the preparation of compounds of the hydroxy benzyl chloride type from HCl, paraformaldehyde and diisobutyl phenol and also complex derivatives starting from these condensates. In some cases, the primary reactants are varied, e.g. using diisobutyl phenol sulphide instead of the phenol.
