Abstract

577,879. Bleaching oils and fats. LEVER BROS. & UNILEVER, Ltd. Oct. 20, 1944, No. 20317. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1943. [Class 91] Dark oils and fats are bleached first with an acidic phosphoric compound and an oxidiz:ng per compound and then with a bleaching earth. Preferably the stock is agitated at 'a slightly elevated temperature with both a small quantity of commercial phosphoric acid and a small quantity of hydrogen peroxide solution, until no further bleaching is manifest, and then washed with hot water to remove the phosphoric acid and any colouring matter that has coagulated. The stock may then be dried and bleached with 2 to 6 per cent. of a bleaching earth in the conventional manner. The acidic phosphoric compound may be commercial orthophosphoric acid in concentrations of from 70 to 85 per cent. Other such compounds used may be pyrophosphoric acid and acid salts of phosphoric acids such as potassium or sodium dihydrogen phosphate or disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate. The oxidizing per-compound may be hydrogen peroxide, or an alkali metal peroxide, perborates or persulphates. Commercial hydrogen peroxide in 30 per cent. solution is used in examples. The proportions of the phosphoric compound and the per-compound may be within the range of .25 to 2 per cent. by weight of oil or fat, .5 to 1 per cent. of each being the optimum range. The bleaching is carried out at a temperature of 60- 70‹C. when the stock is in the liquid state but below the temperature at which charring commences, i.e., 80-90‹ C. The treating time is from one half to one and a half hours. The process may be operated as a batch or a continuous one. Specification 577,880 is referred to.
