Abstract

577,798. Alloys; granulating alloys. MANGANESE BRONZE & BRASS CO., Ltd., and ROBSON, E. March 9, 1943, No. 3811. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] A sintered metal composition consisting of copper, tin and lead, wherein the lead is uniformly distributed is made by mixing a powdered alloy of lead and tin with powdered copper, compressing the mixture to form a briquette or compact, and sintering. Various compositions of tin-lead alloys, and various mixtures of copper powder and tin-lead alloys of specified compositions are described. Graphite or volatile lubricant or both may be added to the mixture. The preferred method of obtaining the powdered tin-lead alloy consists in melting the desired proportions of tin and lead together in a pot the bottom of which is provided with a small aperture and a tubular extension, the sizes of which are determined according to the degree of fineness required in the powdered product. An annular nozzle surrounds the opening of the tubular extension, heated air being blown through the nozzle so as to impinge upon and disintegrate the falling jet of molten tin-lead alloy issuing from the tubular extension.
