Abstract

An abrading tool comprises a solid metal support element to which is brazed a sintered surface element containing abrasive material. As applied to a grinding-wheel, the abrasive material comprises abrasive grit, for example, diamond dust, silicon carbide, boron carbide, sapphire, &c. coated first with metal, then with glass or ceramic and then again with metal. This abrasive grain is mixed with powdered metal or carbide and the mixture is placed in a die to form a ring, and compressed, then being heated to a pre-sintering temperature. A support portion of the wheel, in the form of a circular metallic body of slightly smaller diameter than the inside diameter of the ring, is placed in the ring, with a strip of brazing material in the space between the periphery of the metal body and the ring, and the whole subjected to a sintering temperature which is above the melting-point of the brazing material, the ring in its sintered form being united by the brazing to the metal body. Flat abrasive p articles may be formed similarly, the abrasive element being first partly formed at pre-sintering temperature, and then placed on the metal support with interposed brazing material, the whole then being subjected to sintering temperature.
