Abstract

577,590. Making nozzles. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and BACK, J. A. June 20, .1944, No. 11698. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Nozzles, for the delivery of a flat jet of liquid as described in Specification 577,589, are produced by rolling a blank to form a venturi throat and then compressing the mouth to produce a slot-shaped orifice. Axial rolling.-A blank H<1>, Fig. 3, with bore H' is mounted for rotation and axial feed to rolls G, of general elliptical shape in axial crosssection, mounted to rotate in a cup E having an internal spherical surface on which the rolls rotate. A housing A has a flange A<1>, to provide a fixed mounting in a lathe &c., and carries ' two-diameter sleeve B internally threaded at E<2> to receive a threaded member C<1> having a flanged end threaded at C<2> to engage threads on the cap E. Pins E<1> engaging slots in the sleeve B restrain the cap from rotation and the member C<1> is splined in a worm-wheel D. The threads B<2> and C<2> are of the same hand, but differ in pitch so that axial movement of the member C<1> produced by rotating the worm L causes a reduced movement of the cup E. A central sleeve F has a head that abuts a shoulder C<4> on one side and the rolls G on the other. The bore H<2> is slightly flared to engage the end of a spring-pressed mandrel J in the sleeve F and this is forced back as the blank advances. At the same time the rolls are gradually moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 3. The diameter in the throat of the nozzle is controlled by a mandrel K<1> supported by a rod K within the mandrel J. When the throat is reduced to the correct size, the rod K rotates with the work and the clicking of a pawl on a ratchet-wheel K<2> indicates this to the operator. Forging-machines.-For flattening the mouth, the rolled nozzle is mounted in a holder M, Fig. 7, held by a clamp M<1> with the nozzle H between jaws O sliding in guides Q<1> under the control of levers P' pivoted at P<1>, normally held open by a spring P<5> and closed by a wedge S<1> actuated by a lever R having a pin R<4> to engage holes N<1> in the base to lock the jaws in either the closed or the open position. The nozzle is located by a stop S<4> retracted by a spring S<5> when the pin S<3> retires on movement of the wedge S<1>. In a modification, the nozzle is flattened by segmental jaws oscillating in a cylinder as controlled by a rotatable cam, perpendicular to the cylinder axis, and situated between the ends of the segments remote from the jaws. Each jaw is provided with an .opening-spring.
