To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY STEPHEN LAND, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at lVaverley, 66 Beecroft road, Brockley, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Lathe and other Tool Holders for Cutting, Shaping, and Screwing Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a self opening die head for use in connection with lathes and other tools wherein a rotary movement is imparted to the work or to the tool spindle, and has for its chief object to provide means whereby a die head of this class is rendered applicable for screwing the reduced parts of shouldered work or for producing shouldered work and screwing the reduced parts thereof, and comprises a device arranged to be actuated by the work shoulder for releasing the die opening mechanism before the said shoulder comes in contact with the dies, whereby reduced portions of varying lengths can be screwed up to the shoulder or to within a predetermined distance therefrom without the necessity of adjusting a stop or other device in accordance with variations in the lengths of the portions to be threaded and without any possibility of the shouldered portions being drawn against the screwing dies and thereby stripping the threads or breaking the dies.
The invention also comprises certain other constructional improvements as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order that my said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect I will describe the same more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a plan of my improved device. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same taken on the line 1. 1. of Fig. 2. Fig. 4C is an end view as seen from the left of Fig. 1 and shows the dies in their closed position. The aforesaid body A has at one end a die-head a furnished on its rear face with a hollow stem at and on its front face with dovetail or other grooves for the reception of the aforesaid dies C. These dies have rearwardly projecting pins 0 c which protrude through slots a in the die-head and engage with segmental cam slots 6 c (Fig. 5) formed in an angularly displaceable disk E which is loosely mounted on a bearing surface a formed on the exterior of the hollow stem a and which is provided with an actuating lever or handle 6. The said hollow stem a is screw-threaded for the reception of a correspondingly screw threaded flanged ring or cap F which is also screw threaded on its inner periphery at f for engaging with screw threads formed on a circular flange a projecting from the body A. The circular flange is adapted to receive the loose detachable rotary bush D (Fig. 3) which is in the form of a disk having in it a central opening cl of approximately the same shape as that of the material or work to be acted upon. The interior of the said circular flange and the adjacent face of the said bush are formed with a ball race for the reception of anti-friction balls cl between them. At the end of the body A op- 7O 17 shows the form of rotary bush used with posite to that carrying the die-head is a shank a for enabling the tool holder to be connected with the turret-head of the lathe. The said body A is also provided with grip ping plates a held in place by set screws c for firmly securing the cutting tools B in proper position at opposite sides of the work. The arrangement of the cutting tools at the opposite sides of the work insures rapidity of cutting and prevents springing of the work.
Rigidly connected to one of the aforesaid adjustable screw-cutting dies C is a lever c (Fig. 4:) which at its outer end is formed with a slot c for the reception of a pin 0 projecting from a lever c adjustably mounted in a hinged piece or carrier 0 (Fig. 10) and retained in place therein by a set screw 0. This hinged piece or carrier 0 also has a finger or projection c which engages with a head c adjustably mounted on the outer end of a stem 0 having at its opposite end a catch piece 0 The said stem 0 is mount ed in a sleeve 0 containing a spring o which normally tends to keep the catch piece 0 protruding through a slot a in the diehead a into a position to engage with a corresponding catch piece 6 (Fig. 5) 0n the adjacent face of the angularly displaceable disk E, when the latter is shafted by its handle 6 into a position to bring its catch piece in proximity to the catch piece 0 The said sleeve 0 is screw threaded for the reception of a nut 0 by means of which the sleeve and therefore the catch piece 0 can be clamped in the slot a in the required position.
e is a spring which is connected with the handle 6 and which is stretched or energized in the act of angularly shifting the disk E in the direction to cause the engagement of the aforesaid two catch pieces 0 6 I will now describe the operation of the device, and in so doing will assume that it is desired to produce set-screws of the kind represented in Fig. 13, having two diameters viz. the screw threaded portion 9, and the hexagonal head g.' The device would be mounted in the lathe turret by its shank a and the work (which in this case would comprise a barof metal of hexagonal shape like the head g) would be mounted at one end in the chuck of the lathe. The screw cutting dies C of the device would be in their open position, owing to the spring c exerting a pull upon the handle of the disk E and causing the latter to assume a position in which the pins 0 on the dies would be set in their outward position. The portion of the work to be acted upon by the device would be passed through the open dies C and the rotary bush D until it reached the cutting tools B. As the work is of hexagonal form the rotary bush D used in the present case, would be one having its opening also of hexagonal shape to correspond therewith (Figs. 7 8 and 9) 1t being understood that I provide a number or serles of these rotary bushes, each having an open ing of different shape or diameter to suit the kind of work the device is intended to deal with, and that the various rotary bushes are interchangeable so that one may be sub stituted for another in the device as occasion requires.
The work having been set into rotation the cutting operation by the tools B is effected in the usual way until a length of the work comprising the length 9 has been turned to the desired diameter. The work is then retracted from the device and the dies C are caused to assume their closed position by turning the disk E by means of its handle 0 into the position indicated in the drawings, in which position said disk is held by the engagement of the two catch pieces 0 6 The work is then again fed through the device whereby the cutting of the screw thread on the portion 9 is effected by the.
screw-cutting dies C. As soon as the entire length of the portion 9 has been screw threaded, the inner face of the head 9' strikes against the inner end of the lever 0 thereby tilting the hinged piece 0 and cansing the finger c to withdraw the catch piece 0 from engagement with the catch piece 0 whereupon the disk E immediately turns, under the action of its spring e into a position to separate the screw cutting dies C and the screw cutting operation automatically ceases. It then only remains for the portion of the work thus operated upon to be withdrawn from the device and severed from the main length of the work, when the finished screw is obtained. It will therefore be seen that by means of my device I am able to cut screws without the necessity of having separate tools for the turning and the screwing operations mounted in the turret, or of having to angularly adjust said turret in order to bring each tool int-o successive operation as required; I thus obtain a great saving in time and, owing chiefly to the satisfactory manner in which the work is sup ported at its inner part by the rotary bush D, I furthermore obtain very accurate workmanship.
To enable a fresh portion of the work to be fed into the device when the dies have been withdrawn, the lever 0 should be moved out of the path of the incoming work and this movement is effected by means of the slotted arm 0 hereinbefore referred to as being rigidly secured at one end to one of the dies. As the dies are being with drawn the arm 0 is moved so that its slotted end which engages the pin 0 of the lever 0 tilts the latter as shown in Fig. 1 and there: by removes it from the path of the fresh portion of work to be operated upon. By
means of the aforesaid slot a in the die head a the stem 0 carrying the catch piece 0 can be adjusted relatively to the catch piece 6 on the disk E so that the initial distance between the dies when they are set by the movement of the disk E against the resistance of its spring 6 prior to the screw cutting operation, can be varied to suit the diameter of the portion of the work to be screw threaded. The said lever 0 carried by the hinged piece 0 is also capable of adjustment therein according to the diameter of the portion of the work to be screw threaded as is necessary in order to prevent the inner end of this lever from interfering with the feeding forward of the work into the device. This adjustment is effected by loosening the set screw 0 and sliding said lever longitudinally in the hinged piece 0 until the inner end of the lever projects to the required extent, depending on the diameter of the work to be screw threaded. The cutting tools B are also capable of adjustment by means of screws Z1 carried by the body A and having collars b (Fig. 6) engaging with notches near the outer ends of the said cutting tools.
Instead of arranging the die head a of the device, to be attached to the body A by screwing the flange a into the cap F as above described, I may make the cap with dovetail grooves therein for engaging with corresponding dovetail projections on the flange a (Figs. 11 and 12) in which case the connection of these parts would be effected by a sliding movement instead of by a rotary one.
Mounted on the die-head a is a laterally sliding block H which when the dies are separated after the completion of a screw cutting operation and the finished screw has been severed from the work can be pushed into a position between the said dies to act as a stop piece for the work when it is fed forward through the chuck of the lathe preparatory to being operated upon by the device. This block or stop serves to insure that the proper length of the work required for the particular length of screw shall be fed forward and renders unnecessary the turning of the turret to bring a stump or the like on said turret into position for acting as the stop. The time thus required for adjusting the turret is saved.
The aforesaid shank a is made hollow for receiving a centering cutter so as to center the work operated upon and if the work is required to be drilled said hollow shank permits of a drill being introduced through it for operating on the work.
It will be readily understood that if the screwing is not to be continued for the entire length of the screw as shown in Fig. 13 but only for a portion of the length (which .may be of a different diameter to that of the remaining portion) the lever 0 would be replaced by another having a laterally bent inner end 0 like that shown at Fig. 14, the length of such bent inner end representing the length of the portion 9 which is not to be screw threaded, the screwing operation being discontinued when the extremity of the bent end 0 is struck by the head 9 of the screw for releasing the dies as above described. Instead of making the lever c with a bent end as shown in Fig. 14, the inner end of the said lever may be furnished with a socket 0 (Fig. 15) in which a transverse member 0 can be adjusted and held by a set screw 0 thus avoiding the necessity of changing the lever 0 when screws having difierent lengths of threaded portions are required.
If it be desired to obtain on the work a screw threaded stem occupying an eccentric position at the end of the work, the rotary bush D would be removed from the device and be substituted by one having an eccentric opening of a shape to suit thework. For instance if a piece like that shown in Fig. 16 is required, a rotary bush of the kind shown at Fig. 17 would be employed, the cutting tools B in this case acting on the end of the work to face the same except at the part where the stem g is required.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. Means for screwing the reduced portion of a piece of shouldered work comprising a die head having selfeopening screwing dies, a feeler arranged to extend in front of the screwing dies, in the path of the work shoulder, a hinged member mounted on the die face for carrying such feeler, and a spring controlled catch arranged to engage with a catch appertaining to the die opening mechanism and actuated in opposition to its spring by the said hinged member for the purpose set forth.
2. Means for screwing the reduced portion of a piece of shouldered work, comprising a die head having self-opening screwing dies, an adjustable feeler arranged to extend in front of the screw-cutting dies in the path of the work shoulder, a hinged member mounted on the die face for carrying such feeler and a spring controlled catch arranged to engage with a catch appertaining to the die opening mechanism and provided with an adjustable member engaging with the aforesaid hinged member for the purpose set forth.
3. Means for screwing the reduced portion of a piece of shouldered work, comprising a die head having self-opening screwing dies, an adjustable feeler arranged to extend in front of the screw cutting dies in the path of the work shoulder, a hinged member mounted on the die face for carrying such feeler, a spring controlled catch arranged to engage with a catch appertaining to the die opening mechanism, a member adjustably carried by the spring controlled catch, and a sleeve for carrying such catch, said sleeve being slidably mounted in a slot formed in the face of the die head and provided with means for securing it in said slot for the purpose specified.
4. In a combined turning and screw cut ting device for lathes, the combination with radially sliding screw cutting dies thereon, of an angularly displaceable disk having cam slots therein, pins on the dies engaging with the cam slots, a catch piece on said disk, a movable spring controlled catch piece with which said disk-catch-piece engages when the disk is moved in a direction to close the dies, a spring tending to move the disk in a direction to disengage the catch pieces, a hinged finger engaging said movable catch piece, a longitudinally adjustable lever carried by said hinged finger, a slotted arm rigidly secured to one of the dies, and a projection on the said adjustable lever engaging with said slotted arm substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. Ina combined turning and screw cutting device for lathes, the combination with the sliding screw cutting dies, the angularly displaceable cam disk for actuating them, the catch piece on the cam disk, and the movable catch piece for engaging the catch piece on the cam disk, of an adjustable head on the movable catch piece, a spring tending to press the movable catch piece through a segmental slot toward the cam disk, a casing for carrying the movable catch piece, means for locking said casing in said slot,
a pivoted carrier, a finger thereon engaging with the head of the movable catch piece, a socket on said finger, a lever mounted in said socket, a pin at the outer end of said lever, and an arm rigidly connected to one of the dies and slotted to receive the said pin substantially as and for the purpose described.
6. In a combined turning'and screw cutting'device, the combination with the screw cutting dies and the means for setting them into their operative and inoperative position; of a sliding plate adapted when the dies are in their inoperative position to lie with its inner end opposite the work entrance of the device substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. A combination turning and screw cutting device for lathes, comprising a body, a detachable head carrying the screwing tools and the mechanism for actuating the latter, and a work supporting and guiding bush rotatably mounted between the body and the detachable head in combination with means for readily attaching and detaching said head to and from the body for enabling the said rotarybush to be removed and exchanged for another having a diiierently-shaped work supporting opening substantially as and for the purpose specified.
