Abstract
577,262. Glass beads. SCHUMANN, S. May 18, 1944, No. 9585. [Class 56] Glass beads are made and 'perforated by depositing a blob of glass on a mould 39 above an aperture therein which is initially occupied by a spring-pressed plunger 43. A pedal 31 is now partially depressed sufficient to cause a sleeve 24 surrounding a weighted plunger 14 carrying a die 15 to descend by a distance a, the sleeve forming a lost motion connection between the pedal and the die. The sleeve carries an offset downwardly projecting extension 34 which causes a lever 47 to work clockwise and permits the plunger 43 to withdraw somewhat from the aperture in the mould under pressure from the die. Continued depression of the pedal causes the die to descend until it reaches the top of the mould whereby the glass is pushed into the mould against the yielding plunger 43. A pin and slot connection P, S between a piercing member 37 and the extension 34 causes the piercing member to slide forward horizontally and a pin 38b projecting therefrom passes through an aperture in the side of the mould and through the glass therein which is still sufficiently plastic. Reverse movement of the pedal restores the apparatus to its initial position in readiness for the formation of the next bead, and the perforated bead which has just been formed is ejected upwardly by the plunger 43 returning to its initial position.
