Abstract
576.783. Rat traps. MARRIAGE, E. B. March 2, 1944, No. 3918. [Class 5 (i)] Relates to rat traps of the kind comprising a base, a spring-actuated movable member thereon, a noose-forming wire attached to the lever, and an apertured abutment for receiving the wire. According to the invention the wire is attached to the lever by a rigid link and the abutment is so disposed that the link is located in its aperture when the trap is set, the link being secured in its set position by resting upon a support whereby a slight pull on the wire causes the lever to move laterally away from the support thus allowing the spring- actuated member to operate upon the wire. In the construction shown a coil spring is mounted on the base board 1, to which is also connected by a staple 14 a wire which passes through the spring and which has a portion forming with the spring extension 6 a stirrup to which is connected a tube 9. Tube 9 has an eyelet 10 engaged by an eyelet on a rod 12 the other end of which carries a brass wire 13 formed with a noose 15. To set the trap the wire and rod 12 are passed through a ring 17 of a wire frame 16 secured to the base board, and the rod 12 is then sprung upwardly until it rests on the top of a pointed wire pillar 18. Any pull on the wire, exerted for instance by a rat entering the noose, dislodges the rod 12 from the pillar and thereby enables the spring to pull the rod and wire through the ring 17 which acts as an abutment for tightening the noose. An adjustable extension 2 is adjustably connected to a base board so that the trap may be pressed into the side of a nick as shown. A safety catch 20 may be prpvided to hold the parts in the operative position.
