Abstract

576,623. Electromagnetic switches. TRIGGS, W. W. (Pan Akt.-Ges. April 6,1843, No. 5495. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 8, 1943.] [Class 38 (v)] In an arrangement wherein a plurality of magnets of similar construction each control a contact or contacts but some contacts or contact sets are common to two or more magnets, an insulating plate for operating the contacts extends laterally from each armature, the contacts are disposed parallel to the cores of the magnets and the armatures are parallel with the cores and move perpendicularly to the cores. The invention enables circuit arrange ments having many switches in series or parallel and controlled by currents in different circuits to be replaced by fewer switches. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement of six electromagnets with armatures carrying insulating members 16A, 16B - - - 16F, which move in the direction of the arrows when the magnets are energised. The two groups of contact springs between members 16A and 16B represent in reality one group of springs a b which is actuated either by 16A or 16B, the member 16B being arranged in a higher plane than the member 16A and engaging the springs at a different point along their length. The members 16 engage the contact springs in some cases directly as at a3 and in other cases through intermediate hoops or other members such as 20, 21. Energisation of magnet corresponding to 16A will operate a certain group of contacts, and energisation of the 16B magnet another group which includes in part some of the contacts operated by 16A. Contact a2 can be opened either by 16A, or by 16C. Members 16C, 16D overlap so that the contacts operated by 16C can also be operated by 16D which will carry 16C along with it. Members 16E and 16F interlock so that operation of 16E will prevent operation of 16F. Contacts d2 and e1 require operation of both 16C and 16E in order to engage each other.
