Abstract
576,525. Cooling electrodes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., CHADWICK, G., and SALTHOUSE, J. E. Jan. 19, 1944, No. 1030. [Class 29] [Also in Groups XI and XXII] Electrodes or holders for resistance heating are cooled by supplying carbon dioxide gas to the electrodes &c. and expanding the gas to form solid CO2 in contact with or good heat relationship therewith. The gas under pressure may pass through a nozzle 2 controlled by a valve 7 so as to expand into a chamber 4 communicating with the interior of the electrode and thus form dry ice in contact with or immediately adjacent the electrode. The gas may pass through vent holes 8 in the electrode and form dry ice on the outside of the electrode. The valve may be moved mechanically, pneumatically or electromagnetically and when used in the movable electrode of a spot-welding machine may be normally closed but moved upwards by air pressure at the same time as air pressure is applied to move the electrode downwards so as to keep the consumption of CO2 at a minimum and at the same time tend to prevent formation of solid CO2 at the orifice 3. A fabric bag 10 or other leaky casing may be fixed to the electrode and holder 5 round the vent holes and is gradually filled with tightly packed dry ice.
