[Class 40 (i)] [Also in Groups XVIII and XIX] The load supported by a tyre a is determined by measuring the area of contact of the tyre with a support and multiplying this by the tyre pressure, a correction being applied to compensate' for tyre-wall rigidity. The contact area is measured by resting the tyre on a pad having a rubber diaphragm d provided with a metal coating d<1> which, with a sheet of dielectric e and a metal plate c', forms a condenser of capacity depending on the contact area. The condenser is connected at a point b in a bridge circuit, Fig. 2, which also contains a resistance f varied by a Bourdon gauge in accordance with the tyre pressure. The bridge is balanced by a variable condenser h or h' calibrated in loads with allowance made for corrections for tyre-wall rigidity, the balance indicator being a cathode-ray device k. In a modification, the tyre is caused to rest on a pad carrying a plurality of electric contacts. Those covered by the contact area are closed and the number so closed is automatically counted and transmitted to one element of a logarithmic computer. Another element of the computer is controlled by the tyre pressure and a third element gives the required load. An inflated bag may be inserted between the tyre and the measuring device. The Bourdon tube is then connected to the bag instead of to the tyre.
