Abstract
574,543. Arrester and pick-up hooks for aircraft. BLACKBURN AEROPLANE & MOTOR CO., Ltd., and PETTY, G. E. Aug. 2, 1933, No. 21689. [Class 103 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Arrester or pick-up hook gear for aircraft comprises a hook carried on an arm which is pivoted to the aircraft for movement about a transverse axis, a spring or the equivalent tending to hold the arm in its depressed position, a trigger on the aircraft, a co-operating catch on the hook, and a fluid pressure actuated system which is operable by the pilot to raise the arm against the action of the spring into a position in which it will be locked by engagement of the catch and trigger. In the construction shown the hook 10 is rigidly attached to a V-shaped arm 11 pivoted at 12 to the under-surface of the machine, a tension spring 13 connecting one limb of the arm to the fuselage and tending to hold the arm in its depressed position. The other limb is connected to a plunger 15 working in a hydraulic cylinder 16 connected by a conduit 17 to a hand pump 18 with a reservoir 20, the pump being operated to lift the arm 11 against the. spring 13. The hook and arm are retained in the raised position by the engagement of a catch 25 on the hook and a trigger 26 on the fuselage, a Bowden cable 27 connecting the latter with a cock 22 in the pipeline 21 from the reservoir 20. To lower the hook the cable' 27 is operated to free the catch 25, the cock 22 being thereby opened and the hook descending at a rate controlled by the setting of a needle valve 23 in the pipe 21. The hook is swung upwardly upon engagement. with the arrester or pick-up wire, the latter of which rotates a pivoted striker 37 connected to the catch 25 in a clockwise direction, whereby the catch engages the trigger 26 and locks the hook in the raised position.
