Abstract
574,361. Aircraft wings. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., CHAPMAN, H. E., and COSTIGAN, F. J. June 1, 1943, No. 8772. [Class 4] A folding aircraft wing in which a part c of the trailing marginal portion of the wing is foldable above or below the forward part prior to the folding of the main wing, has the part c operated by a link k connected to one arm d of a bell-crank lever pivoted about a fore-and-aft axis f on the rear spar of the wing, the other arm e being connected to an operating rod movable transversely of the aircraft. The upper end of the link k is connected by a universal joint to the front of the part c which is shown hinged at its upper edge c<1>. As shown, the operating rod s is connected to an intermediate point r of a floating lever q, one end of which is connected by a link p to the arm e of the bell-crank lever and the other end to a bolt u' for locking the part c in its extended position. The bolt engages holes 12, 13 formed in parts w, x, Fig. 3, on the wing spar and folding part c respectively, and is withdrawn by the rod s prior to the movement of the bell-crank lever. When the part c is folded, a spring-pressed member y closes the gap between the holes 12 and prevents the bolt u from being shot home until the part y has again been displaced by the member x and the holes 12, 13 are in register.
