574,191. Broaching. OAKLEY, J. Jan. 12, 1944, No. 655. [Class 83 (iii)] In a broaching-machine the cutter B is mounted in a carrier 7 which is pivoted near one end at 8 to a reciprocating slide 4, the other end of the carrier being backed by a cam 20 to maintain the cutter in operative position for the cutting stroke. At the end of this stroke, a pin 32 on an arm 30 attached to the cam engages a fixed stop 34 to rotate the cam and bring a cut-away portion 22 opposite the carrier which is thereby rocked about the pivot 8 by one or more springs 26 to disengage. the cutter from the work for the return stroke. If the spring 26 fails to act, a pin 40 on the carrier 7 engages the stop 34 to retract the cutter positively, and at the end of the return stroke a second pin on the cam 20, at the other side of the carrier, engages a fixed stop to rotate the cam and restore the cutter to operative position. The cam is mounted in a bracket 12 attached to the slide 4 and the spring 26 is located in a pocket 24 in the carrier and abuts on a plate 28 attached to the bracket 12. The pivot 8 is mounted in a bracket 6 on the slide 4 and the cutter is preferably pulled through the work from the pivoted end.
