Abstract
573,335.. Armouring vehicles. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT, Ltd., PETTER, W. E. W., and RICHARDS, S. T. A. April 30, 1942, No. 5844. [Class 92 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A pressure cabin for aircraft has a substantial part of its shell composed of bullet-resisting material thicker than is required by considerations of pressure. Aluminium or magnesium light alloy plates or sheets are used diminishing in thickness towards those areas where glancing shots are most likely but steel bulkheads are used where shots more nearly normal to the surface are to be expected. Fig. 1 shows a cabin in which plates f, j, k, n, o, p, q, r, curved to the required contour are secured together at their edges by butt straps and countersunk rivets. The plates are thicker near the pilot's feet than near the shoulders. Steel bulkheads a, b of homogeneous hard armour are placed before and behind the cabin and a light fairing d forms the nose. The cockpit is bounded by a strong casting e to which the side plates f and a wind-screen g are secured as well as a front plate w. Castings i extend from the forward spar of the wing and form the wing ends, the plates n, o, p, q, r being secured to these castings. A stay h braces the sides of the cabin together. A sliding transparent hood is provided. Lagging material u such as sponge, cork sheet, or wool or kapok covers the inside of the cabin with an inner lining.
