Abstract
556,826. Armouring aircraft. MARTIN, J., and MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd. June 6 1942, No. 7723. [Class 92 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] An aeroplane for attacking heavily armoured vehicles and ships has an elongated armour plated nacelle 1 housing an axially disposed six-pounder anti-tank gun 10 or like heavy weapon at its forward end and an engine driving a pusher propeller 5 at its rear end, the pilot's cockpit being arranged between them. The nacelle is formed as a self supporting shell without separate framework, the forward portion comprising tapered panels welded at their edges to form an octagonal structure connected to a nose piece 9 closely surrounding the gun barrel 10. The forward edges of the wings 2 lie just to the rear of the cockpit and the tail planes 4 are carried by two booms 3 extending from the wings. The gun is preferably of the automatic loading type, but breech mechanism may be used operable by the pilot or a separate gunner. The petrol tank is located just behind the pilot at the centre of gravity of the aircraft. An air inlet scoop 25 and a corresponding outlet 26 direct cooling air across a radiator 22 within the nacelle. The aircraft is fitted with a tricycle undercarriage and an escape hatch beneath the pilot's cockpit.
