[Class 45] The apparatus of the parent Specification for tensioning strip material round boxes, bales, &c., is modified by providing a movable guard for the strip. It comprises a base 11 on which are mounted two cams 16, 17 carried by spindles 14, 15 and operated by handles 18, 19 respectively. The cam 16 holds the inner end 29A of the strip and the cam 17 holds the tensioned end 29B, springs 21 effecting the gripping and manual operation of the handles producing release. The gripping jaws for engaging and pulling the end 29B consist of a yoke 32 pivoted at 31 to the base 11 and formed with a curved foot 34A furnished with a central serrated plug. Pivoted at 37 to the yoke 32 is a mating shoe 39, the operating handle 38 being fixed on the shaft 37. The handle 38 in its final forward movement strikes a stop 45 about which it pivots and opens the gripping surfaces 34A, 39B, thus releasing the strip. On moving the handle 38 back, the gripping surfaces lightly slide over the strip, but when the handle is moved forward the strip is gripped and pulled through the clasp of the cam 17. Repeated to-and-fro action of the handle thus gradually tightens the strip, and the ends 29A, 29B are finally clamped together in any suitable manner. A side shield 41 tiltable about a pivot 42 may be moved aside to admit the strip 29B between the grip faces 34A, 39B and then turned down to retain the strip laterally. The cam 16 is stepped to allow the strip to pass it, and the end of the curve 39B is made tangential to the oncoming strip.
