Abstract

572,924. Automatic guns. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., FAULKNER, H. A., and WACKROW, R. D. May 21,1942, No. 6904. [Class 119] The built-up breech-body 1 of a gas-operated automatic gun comprises a rectangular tube of the cross-section shown in Fig. 8 having an upper feed-slot 2 and a lower ejection aperture 3. The rear part of the tube is reinforced at the top by a plate 4, shown in plan in Fig. 11, which has shoulders 5 against which a verticallysliding wedge 6 abuts to lock the breech, Fig. 2, an ejector rib 5a, and a stock-attachment lug 8 upon which the backsight is also mounted. In front of the feed-slot 2, a second reinforcing member 18, Fig. 13, is fixed by riveting, and this provides also a support for the front end of the cartridge magazine, for 'which a sheetmetal housing 16 comprising a cartridge guideway is provided. In the front end of the tube 1 a barrel-attachment block 10, Fig. 3, is fixed by welding. The barrel is fixed in the block by a transverse pin 14. The lower part of the block has a longitudinal passage 11 for the gas-piston extension 12. To the lower longitudinal corners of the tube grooved angleplates 19 are fixed, the ends 22 of which protrude rearwardly and receive a stock-fixing bar 23. The grooves 20 in the plate guide the pistol-grip 21 which functions as a cocking- handle.
