Abstract
572,699. Bombs. BLACKER, L. V. S. July 27, 1940, No. 12245. [Classes 9 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to bombs of the kind having a propellent charge 7 located in a tail tube 2a which engages over a spigot 9 forming the throwing- device. According to the invention, the charge 7 is wholly or in part contained within a cupshaped member 6 which is expanded radially by the gas pressure to form a gas seal. As shown, the charge 7 is completely enclosed by two cup-shaped members 6, 6a, the member 6 being recessed into the spigot 9 and carrying the cap or detonator 8 which is struck by a firing-pin 11 sliding in the spigot. Firing is effected by a hammer 12 engaged by a rotary cam 14. The bomb comprises a chamber 1 for the bursting-charge, the tail tube 2a screwed into a base 2, the fairing 5, and a drum-shaped tail 3 with vanes 4. The rear part of the throwing-device may be extended to engage the ground by means of a spade and may include a hydro-pneumatic buffer device. Specification 125,771, [Class 9 (i)], is referred to.
