Abstract

572,548. Spring forks. DAWSON, W.L. May 6, 1943, No. 7163. [Class 136 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXII] Relates to an elastic fork suspension for bicycles, motorcycles &c. of the type comprising two pairs of telescopic, pistona.nd-cylinder elements each having a space or spaces between the piston and cylinder containing compressed air. According to the invention, for pressure equalisation purposes, corresponding parts of the cylinders are interconnected by a conduit or passageway incorporated in a mechanical coupling between the two elements. In the front fork suspension shown, each cylinder, which consists of two tubes 1, 2 secured together, is closed at its upper end by a cap 8 having a non-return valve 9 and carries at its lower end a non-return valve 10 and a bearing 3 for a tube 4 which, at its lower end, is forked to receive the wheel axle and, at its upper end, carries the piston 6. A pump may be attached to the valves 9, 10 to force air into the spaces above and below the pistons 6, corresponding parts of both cylinders being interconnected by rigid cross-bars 14, 15 which are made hollow to allow passage of air between the two elements. A leather bellows may be provided between the end of each cylinder 1, 2 and its tube 4 to prevent ingress of dirt.
