Abstract

572,523. Propelling and steering water-craft. WILD, P. H. April 12, 1944, No. 15147/43. [Classes 113 (ii) and 114] In water-craft which are propelled and/or steered by air or gas discharged through one or more outlets 2 in the hull below the water-line W.L. and into one or more longitudinal raceways, the latter extend upwardly from a position aft of midships towards the stern and terminate slightly above the water-line when the vessel is on an even keel, the aft portion of the raceway being of lesser inclination than the main portion. Additional outlets 4 may supply air to similar raceways which extend upwardly from a position forwards of midships towards the bows. One or more auxiliary outlets 2a, 4a may be arranged above and beyond the outlets 2, 4. The raceways may be formed by grooves in the hull, or by fins 3, 5 which extend downwardly and outwardly in continuation of the bilge keels. The outlets may be circular, but preferably they are of oblong, oval, or other formation with their major dimension extending laterally, and they may be fitted with finely-perforated gratings or the like to produce an emulsive discharge. Steam and/or mercury vapour ejectors may be utilized for discharging the air, and some of the steam may be mixed with the air. The air is supplied to the outlets by pipes 6 under the control of a single multiway valve.
