[Class 106 (ii)] A gauge comprising a pair of elements having parallel gauging faces and surfaces inclined thereto for longitudinal adjustment to vary the distance between the faces, is provided with means for creating a force to draw the elements together and lock or maintain them in adjusted position. The gauge as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, comprises an upper element 1 with a centrally located groove 2 in which a tongue 3 is secured, and a lower element 6 with an undercut, circular or dovetail groove 7 to provide bearing surfaces for the tongue 3. The tongue 3 is formed with a transverse hole 10 into which extends a longitudinal bore 12. The bore is tapped at its outer end and receives a screwed plunger 13 formed with a cone-point 14 to seat between two balls 11 located in the transverse hole. By screwing in the plunger the balls are moved outwardly to press on the walls of the groove 7. The upper element is provided with a facet 15 and is provided with a scale on its face to cooperate with an adjustable zero index plate 17. Instead of a positive thrust, a resilient thrust may be employed by forming the plunger with a collar on which presses a screw adjusted by a grub screw. In a modification, Fig. 6, the locking action is obtained by eccentric means. In this case the tongue 24 on the upper element is formed with apertured bosses 25 serving as. bearings for a spindle 26 having an eccentric boss 27 on which a roller 28 is mounted. Another modification, Fig. 8, has the eccentric boss 32 arranged transversely of the gauge. In addition the tongue 36 has serrations 42 that cooperate with a spring-controlled sliding pin 43 which serves to locate the elements in a manner similar to that described in Specification 564,065.
