Description

United States Patent 2,352,855 it atomized Sept. 23, 1958 RING THREAD GAUGE Bror W. Swanson, West Hartford, Conn...
Application October 5, 1956, Serial No. 614,273
1 Claim, (Cl. 33-199) The present invention relates to gauges generally and in particular to a gauge for threads on bolts and the like.
An object of the present invention is to provide a ring thread gauge which lends itself to the rapid and accurate gauging of threads produced by automatic machines on bolts or the like, threads which are produced on special Work pieces in machine shops, one which is readily adjusted and adapted for use on various sized threaded stocl; work pieces, and one which is highly eifective in action.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a ring thread gauge which is simple in structure, one which is sturdy in construction and having long wearing characteristics, and one which may be used on relatively long threaded stock work pieces and Of such size and shape as would be readily spun upon such work pieces.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view partially in section of the ring thread gauge according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side view partially in section of the assembly of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan View taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a further sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the ring thread gauge of the present invention comprises a pair of plate members and 11 arranged in face to face spaced relation. Means is provided connecting the plate members 10 and 11 together for movement toward and away from each other. Specifically, this means embodies machine screws 12 extending through the plate member 10 and threadedly engaged in tapped holes provided in the plate member 11.
The plate members 10 and 11 each have an opening medially thereof and each has on its confronting face longitudinally extending recesses on each side of the opening. In Figure 5 the opening is indicated by the reference numeral 13 and the recesses by the reference numerals 14 and 15.
A pair of thread gauge blocks 16 and 17 are provided, each having an arcuate portion carried by the respective one of the stems 18 and 19. The blocks are positioned so that the arcuate portions are within the medial openings in the plate members 10 and 11 and face each other With the stems 18 and 19 received in the slots which are formed by the mating recesses 14 and 15 in the plate members 10 and 11.
Means is provided connecting each of the blocks 16 and 17 to the adjacent portions of the plate members 111 and 11 for independent movement of the blocks 16 and 17 relative to each other. Specifically, this means comprises an adjusting machine screw 20 threadedly engaged in a tapped bore provided in the stem 18 of the block 16 and having a shoulder 21 at one end received in means or a recess 22 provided in the confronting faces of the plate members 10 and 11 and arranged transversely of the recess 14. Another adjusting machine screw 23 is similarly positioned within a bore formed in the stem 19 of the block 17. Turning of the machine screws 2d and 23 results in the movement of the blocks 16 and 17, respectively, toward and away from each other and provides a means by which the blocks 16 and 17 may be adjusted to a particular thread gauge size.
Preferably, the stems 18 and 19 of the blocks 16 and 17, respectively, are formed to be slightly oversized in thickness, on the order of .0003 inch, so that when the plate members 19 and 11 are tightened together by means of the machine screws 12, the stems 18 and 19 are held securely between the members 119 and 11. This permits the ring thread gauge of the present invention to be rotated upon a threaded work piece for gauging the threads that have been out thereon in a rapid and eflicient manner, the drag of the gauge indicating to the user thereof that the threads in the work piece are of the right depth and size as desired. The gauge may be spun rapidly along a threaded work piece without danger of its losing its set gauge position.
What is claimed is:
A thread gauge comprising a pair of plate members each having an opening medially thereof and a longitudinally extending recess on one face of said member on each side of said opening extending from said opening to the adjacent end edge of said member, said members being arranged so that said one face of said member faces said one face of the other member with said openings in registry with each other and with the recess of one member on each side of said opening in registry with the adjacent recess of said other member and forming therewith a slot, a pair of thread gauge blocks each having a stem and an arcuate portion carried by said stem, the blocks being positioned between said plate members so that the arcuate portions are within the medial openings in said plate members and face each other with each of said stems slidably received in the adjacent one of said slots, means movably carried by each of said stems and engaging means formed on the adjacent portions of the plate members for effecting the sliding movement of said blocks relative to each other, and means for releasably locking said stems in said slots.
