[Class 60] Actuating means for a cylinder hone comprises means for rotating and reciprocating the hone, and means for operating the hone expanding means during operation, and actuated by the reciprocation of the hone. A driving spindle a has rotatable thereon a sleeve b, which is rotated, at a speed differing slightly from that of the spindle, by gears c and pinions d in a housing e held stationary whilst the apparatus is in use. Slidably keyed to the sleeve b is the hollow rear portion of a cage g, the cage being reciprocated by a cam groove i in a part h secured to the spindle a, and engaged by a ball &c. j in the cage ; a swashplate mechanism may be substituted for the cam groove &c. The forward end of the cage carries a hollow spindle k adapted for connection to the hone, and within the spindle k is a feed spindle m, which is rotated relatively to the spindle k to expand the hone. This rotation, which is intermittent, is effected by a ratchet wheel o, rotatable on a spindle 2 carried by a transverse member n of the cage g, and actuated by a pawl p pivoted on the member n and loaded by a spring q, the pawl being rocked by a lever r extending through a hole in the member n, and moved by contact with the part h as the cage reciprocates ; both ends of the pawl may engage the wheel o alternately. The movements of the wheel o are transmitted to the feed spindle m through gearing u and a friction clutch v, w, the member w of which carries an adjustable stop 3 adapted to contact a stop 4 on the cage to arrest the feed. A slidable sleeve 6 encloses the mechanism in the cage.
