Abstract

564,789. Windscreen-wipers. FRANGHIA, S. B. July 9, 1943, No. 11126. [Class 138 (i)] A windscreen-wiper of the kind in which the wiper blade 8 is given a rotary motion about an axis at right angles to the plane of the blade, is constructed with an arm 5 for carrying the blade 8 which is joined to a tube 11 extending through the windscreen or its frame, the tube 11 being rotatable so as to bring the arm from operative to parked position, or vice versa, by cam or eccentric mechanism, e.g. by cams 37, 38, which operate to move the tube 11 from one position to the other, in conjunction with locking devices which hold the arm and tube 11 in adjusted position. The tube 11 is provided with a segmental flange 30, Fig. 2, and the cams 37, 38 operate plungers 39, 40 which engage shoulders 31, 32 on the member 30 to rotate the tube 11 so as to move the arm 5 into and out of operative position. The cams are operated by a handle 36 on a rod 34, and in the operative or inoperative positions the arm 5 is locked in position since the axis of the plunger passes through the peak of the cam and the axis of the cam-shaft. The cam-shaft 34 is fitted with two ratchets 41, 42 engaged by pawls 44, 45, Fig. 3 (not shown), which operate in turn to control the direction in which the shaft 34 can be rotated, and the operating-pawl can be released by a cam 48 operated by a sleeve 46 with handle 47 when the movement into parked or active position has been completed. The cam 48 is integral with a further cam recess which controls the current to the motor which drives the bevel gear 20 from which is derived the means for rotating the pad 8. The drive can thus only take place when the arm 5 is in operative position and is transmitted through bevel gears 21, 24, 25, 27, 28. The connection between the pad 8 and its driving-shaft is a splined one, so that a spring 8a can press the pad 8 into contact with the screen 10, and rollers 8c on the blade engage ramps on the body work to guide the blade into the " parked " position.
