[Class 60] A machine for grinding the profile of a workpiece, by copying a pattern or template, is provided with a tooth rest, for use in the grinding of spiral fluted milling cutters, having an operative part extending across the grinding surface of the grinding-wheel, and at each side of the wheel. The machine shown has a grinding-wheel 10 rotatable on a horizontal axis in a head 11, and the table 12 of the machine carries a vertical cylindrical post. 47, constituting a pattern follower, engaging a pattern 16 carried by a carriage 13 capable of free universal movement in a horizontal plane ; the carriage supports, on brackets 26, the cutter 71. The tooth rest comprises a U-shaped member 70, which spans the periphery of the wheel 10, and has a leg 70b extending inwardly from the grinding-surface of the wheel ; the curved part 70a of the rest engages in the flute 71b between the tooth 71a being ground and the next lower tooth and is tilted to the same angle to the horizontal as are the cutter teeth. The rest is carried by pillars 72 on a plate 73-slidable in grooves 74 in a member 75 encircling the socket 77 of the follower 47, the plate and member being secured in position by a screw 76. In order to allow removal of the rest without raising the plate 73, the edges of the plate and the lips of the grooves 74 have cut out parts 73b, 75b respectively, so that on lifting the member 75 the plate 73 may be removed laterally; it can also be lifted to allow of lateral removal. The angle made by the part 70a of the rest may be adjusted by means of screws 78 in the pillars 72. A spring 79, tending to rotate the cutter 71, causes the tooth- 71a being ground to bear on the rest 70. Specification 523,086 is referred to.
