Abstract

619,401. Grinding cutting edges. REYNOLDS, C. G., and SAYERS, A. G. Dec. 6, 1946, No. 36179. [Class 60] A machine for grinding cutting blades formed with a clearance at the back of the cutting edge thereof, comprises in combination blade supporting means for a blade to be ground, a grinding wheel having two grinding faces, one for grinding in a substantially vertical plane and the other for grinding in a non-vertical plane, driving means to rotate said grinding wheel, a carriage for the grinding wheel and driving means, means to move the carriage relatively to the support whereby the grinding wheel traverses a blade during a grinding operation and blade positioning means to maintain the portion of a blade to be engaged by the grinding wheel substantially parallel with the appropriate one of said grinding faces thereof at the instant of engagement, whereby a blade can be ground while maintaining the clearance at the back of the cutting edge of the blade. For grinding a helical rotary blade HL of a lawn mower, Fig. 4, the rotary blades are mounted in or between adjustably fixed pillars 13 while a cup-shaped grinding wheel 23 is traversed past with its vertical flat annular face in contact with the blade being ground. The downwardly moving side of the face of the grinding wheel 23 engages the blade and does so at a position below the axis of rotation of the blade, a finger 31 on the grinding wheel carriage contacting the underside of the blade being ground and co-operating with the downwardly moving side of the grinding wheel to rotate the blade as the grinding wheel carriage is traversed. The carriage is traversed by turning by rotation of a hand-wheel 30, a pinion in the carriage which engages a fixed rack 25. When a flat ledger blade FB is to be ground, Fig. 5, the blade is supported by a pair of discs 39 mounted on the pillars 13 and having apertures of various sizes to take the stub shafts of different types of ledger blades, an indexing pawl and peripheral notches on the discs allowing of correct positioning of the stub-shafts. The blade FB is set so that the edge is at the correct angle to the vertical by an adjustable screw 45 and the grinding wheel 23 is traversed with its conical face 23a engaging the blade edge. The grinding wheel may be moved in a direction normal to the traverse by means of a handwheel 36 and associated screw and nut mechanism.
