Upon the table or platform t0 the dressing implement is; adapted to bev placedl and moved free` ly thereofver. and then curved downwardly and underneath the platform I in an arm 22. At the free end of the arm 22 a holder 23 for a diamond wheel dresser 24 is mounted, the feeler 2| and the holder 23 being one directlyover the other.
As previously statedthe edge of the template I6 is adjusted or located over the grinding wheel so that such edge at any point will lie directly over the final finished and dressed surface of the Wheel in a vertical plane, indicated at A, tangent to the surface of the grinding wheel, such tangent plane being at right angles to the horizonta1 diameter of the grinding wheel indicated at B. The dressing diamond or equivalent at 24 lies in the plane of the horizontal diameter of the grinding wheel at B,
With this construction and with the parts located as described, the part vI 9 may be moved over the upper surface of the table or platform I Il. And by keeping the vertical knife edge of the feeler 2| against the template the wheel will be dressed with a contour reproducing at any cross section thereof the edge of such template. The feeler 2| and the holder 23 for the dressingpoint are mounted so that the knife edge of the feeler and the outer point of the diamond 24 lie the one over the other in a plane at an angle of 90 to the surface of base I9 where it engages platform I0.
Withthis construction of grinding wheel dressing implement the platform or table II) accurately secured in place and fixed with respect to the grinding wheel axis and the parts 2| and 23 accurately adjusted, there is then required for operation merely the locating of the movable dressing implement upon the platform and with a proper adjustment of the template IE to a position such that with the feeler 2| against it the dressing of the wheel is the diamond 24 coming into an operative dressing engagement therewith. After the wheel has been dressed to a desired outer peripheral contour or shape the immediate movable dressing implement maybe removed by merely taking it away from the platform I0, and it may be replaced without requiring adjustment. I
In previous dressings of grinding wheels by use of templates as guides and the mounting of the movable dressing-implement upon the table of the grinding machine, the table and the wheel being relatively adjustable and movablevertically with respect to each other it has been necessary to Very carefully and accurately adjust the table and the wheel with respect to each other so as to properly locate the dressing diamond in proper relation to the axis of the grinding wheel. This difficult operation is avoided with the present invention. Also a greater accuracy in dressing is attained because of a greater stability in that in the dressing the implement consisting of the part I9, rib 20 and arm 22 is relatively heavy and is not subject to vibration or chattering. Furthermore the dressing of the grinding wheel takes place below the template and feeler so that abrasive material cut from the grinding wheel does 1 not come into contact with either the template or feeler, eliminating any danger of harming the edge of the template or contacting edge of the feeler which might occur with the highly abrasive dust falling upon and affecting said template and feeler.
While the disclosure shows and normally in practice, the upper side of the platform III will lie in a horizontal plane, therefore, the point of the diamond cutter 24 and the axis of the grinding wheel will lie kin a horizontal plane as indiaccomplished through cated at B, and the edge of the feeler 2| and the point of the diamond cutter 24 will lie in the vertical plane A, it is to be understood that under other conditions the diamond cutter 24 may engage the grinding wheel at a different position, this being dependent uponl the plane occupied by the upper side of the platform I 0. If the platform I 0 was inclined upwardly and outwardly in Fig. 1 instead of as shown, the diamond cutter 24, would engage the wheel 4 at a point above that shown in Fig. 1, so that a plane including the axis of the grinding wheel and the point of the cutter would be inclined to the horizontal to the same degree or amount that the platform III was thus inclined. In such case the template I6 would be moved inward so that the plane indicated at A in which the edge of the feeler 2| and the point of the cutter are located would be inclined to the vertical, with the plane indicated at A at to the plane passing through the axis of the grinding wheel and the point of the cutter 24. Therefore the invention is not necessarily restricted to the upper side of platform I0 lying in a horizontal plane or that the planes B and A shall be horizontal and vertical planes respectively. But in all cases the planes indicated at A and B are at right angles to each other and the plane indicated at B is parallel to the upper surface of the platform I0.
In Figs. 5 and 6 a slightly different embodiment of the invention is shown. The platform I0 is replaced by a platform |00 in which a relatively long and wide arcuate opening'll is made. The base I9 rests upon the platform in use and its rib 20 above it has opposite extensions each carrying a knife edge feeler 2|. From the base I9 a post 22D extends downwardly through the elongated opening Ill| and at its lower end carries a head .22| disposed in a generally horizontal position with parts extending in opposite directions from the lower end of the post, in each of which a holder 23 and a dressing point 24 are mounted. i
With this construction the base 29 may be moved over the platform I0 so as to keep the feeler at 2| in contact engagement with the edge of the template I6, whereupon the dressing point 24 below will engage the periphery of the grinding wheel and reproduce the contour of the edge of the template at the peripheral edges of the grinding wheel 4. The rst dressing of a grinding wheel is a rough dressing'and is followed by a finer and more accurate dressing. With the construction shown when the rough dressing has been accomplished, the base I9 and the parts attached and movable therewith are turned through an angle of to bring the opposite feeler 2| against the edge of the template and the opposite dressing point 24 into engagement with the periphery of the grinding wheel.l
In both of the constructions shown and described the beneficial results are attained in the same manner. It is to be understood that while in the disclosure the platform IB is shown as mounted upon a lateral extension to the hood 'I over the upper part of the grinding wheel, such specific arrangement is not necessarily essential to the invention. What is of importance is that the axis of -the grinding wheel and the platform I0 over which the base I9 of the dressing implement is moved are held in a fixed relation to each other; and therefore the platform I0 may be mounted in any suitable manner which will maintain this relationship.
It is further to be noted that the block I3 which carries the template I6, being of relatively light weight and mass, may be very accurately and finally adjusted using the adjusting screw I4 for such purpose. There is no coupling up of the adjustment and positioning of the template with any movement of the relatively heavy table of a grinding machine which in previous grinding wheel dressers, has had to be changed and moved and adjusted in its position in order to bring the dressing diamond cutter at the proper position at the periphery of the grinding wheel. This feature of the invention is productive of greater accuracy and'of less deterioration and wear upon the expensive dressing diamonds used, so that they do not need replacement as often as in previ-V ous practice.
Having thus described our invention what we desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In a grinding machine, a grinding wheel, a platform'secured in fixed relation to the axis of the grinding wheel, a dressing implement having a base with an under side to rest upon and be moved over the upper side of the platform, said dressing implement having a part extending` from the base to one side thereof and a part extending downwardly fromy the base and at its lower portion having an arm extending inwardly toward the grinding wheel, said second mentioned part passing through said platform and saidplatform having an -opening of relatively large size whereby the dressing implement may be moved over the platform, a feeler attached to said first mentioned part and a dressing cutter for the grinding wheel mounted on and extending from the lower free end of said arm, the free edge of the feeler and the outer point of the dressing cutter being disposed in a plane perpendicular to the upper side of the platform.
2. A construction containing the elements in combination defined in claim l, a third part extending from said base opposite the first men tioned part, a feeler attached thereto at its outer end and said second mentioned part at its lower end having a second arm extending opposite from the first arm, and a dressing 4cutter carried at the outer end thereof.
3. An implement for dressing grinding Wheels adapted to be moved over a platform held in fixed relation to the axis of the grinding wheel comprising, a base having an under surface to rest upon and be moved over the upper side of the platform, opposite lateral extensions to said base at its front and rear, a feeler connected to the outer end of each of said extensions, a post depending from said base substantially midway between its front and rear and adapted to pass through an opening in the platform, said post at its lower end having a head with oppositely extending arms disposed directly under the platform extensions, each of vsaid arms at its outer end carrying a wheel dressing cutter, as and for the purposes specified.
