Abstract
570,983. Polarizers. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. Oct. 1, 1942, No. 13783. Convention date, June 3. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XXXII] A polarizing visor for use in a vehicle, which minimizes the effect of relative lateral tilting of the visor and the polarizing screen of the headlights viewed through it, is so formed and mounted that the orientation of the polarizing axis varies in a clockwise direction horizontally from left to right of the visor with respect to the driver and is substantially uniform in the vertical direction. The Figures show a visor in two positions of tilt due to road camber, the curved lines 12 representing the polarizing axes. The driver tends to maintain an upright position and so moves relatively to the visor in such a way that the oncoming lamps are seen in positions 30, 33 respectively to left and right of the centre of the visor ; in each case the tilt causes the polarizing axes 12 at the corresponding position of the visor to be substantially perpendicular to that of the polarizer of the approaching lamps. In a modification, the visor is divided into portions arranged side-by-side having their axes of polarization at different angles to the horizontal. The polarizer may comprise a suspension of oriented polarizing particles in a transparent medium, or a molecularly oriented plastic rendered dichroic as described in Specifications 548,759 or 549,698.
